Free Business Listing Sites in India: The Ones That Actually Matter

By Sashenk Anand Jordan · 26 Sept 2026

Search for business listing sites and you will find articles promising 100, 250, even 500 free directories to submit your business to. Most of that is padding. A large share of those sites are abandoned, stuffed with spam, or exist only so somebody could write a list about them.

What actually helps is a short list of places real customers use, filled in properly and kept consistent. Here is that list, plus how to judge the ones we have not named.

Start with the one that matters more than all the others combined

Google Business Profile (business.google.com) is not one item on this list. It is roughly the whole list.

When somebody searches for a service near them, Google answers with a map and three businesses above the ordinary results. That block is built almost entirely from your Google Business Profile, not from your website. If you do one thing from this article, claim and complete that profile.

Completing it means every field, not just the name and number: your categories, your full service list with descriptions, hours including holiday hours, real photographs, attributes, and a description written for a human being. Most profiles we look at are half empty, and the half that is missing is the half Google uses.

You may still see this called Google My Business, or GMB. Google renamed it. Same thing.

The two search engines everyone forgets

Bing Places (bingplaces.com) takes about ten minutes and can usually import everything straight from your Google profile. Bing is small in India, but it is also where Microsoft Copilot and some AI assistants pull local business data from, which makes it worth more now than it was three years ago.

Apple Business Connect (businessconnect.apple.com) puts you on Apple Maps. Every iPhone user who taps a map app is looking at Apple Maps by default. In India that is a smaller slice than in the West, but it is a slice that tends to spend.

Both are free. Both are genuinely overlooked.

India's general directories

These are the ones with real traffic from real customers rather than SEO value alone:

  • JustDial (justdial.com). The most used local search service in India by some distance. Expect sales calls after you list; that is the trade.
  • IndiaMART (indiamart.com). Dominant if you sell to other businesses, wholesale or manufacture anything.
  • Sulekha (sulekha.com). Strong for local services: tutors, repairs, movers, events.
  • TradeIndia (tradeindia.com) and ExportersIndia (exportersindia.com). Both business to business and export oriented. Worth it if that is your market, a waste of an afternoon if it is not.

The ones built for your field, which usually beat the general ones

If one of these covers your field, it will almost certainly send you more customers than five general directories:

  • Practo (practo.com) for doctors, dentists, physiotherapists and clinics
  • Zomato (zomato.com) for restaurants and cafes
  • UrbanPro (urbanpro.com) for tutors, trainers and coaching
  • 99acres (99acres.com) for property and real estate

The pattern holds beyond these four. Whatever you do, there is probably a platform customers in your field already search, and being properly listed there is worth more than being thinly listed in twenty places nobody visits.

Profiles that work like listings

LinkedIn and Facebook company pages are not directories, but Google treats them as another confirmation that your business exists and that its details are what you say they are. They also tend to rank for your business name, which means they occupy space that would otherwise show something you do not control.

How to judge a directory nobody has told you about

You will find hundreds more. Some are fine. Most are not. Four questions sort them quickly:

  1. Would a customer ever use this site to find a business? If you cannot imagine it, the listing is not for customers. It is for SEO, and the SEO value of a directory nobody visits is close to zero.
  2. Is it current? Open a few listings. If the businesses shown are closed, or the newest review is from 2019, the site is abandoned.
  3. Does it want money before it will show your listing at all? Paid upgrades are normal. Paying to exist is a sign the free tier does nothing.
  4. Is your category on it, or is it a general dumping ground? Specific beats broad, every time.

If a site fails two of those, skip it. You lose nothing.

The thing that matters more than the number of listings

Being in fifty directories with slightly different information is worse than being in eight with identical information.

Google checks your name, address and phone number against every other place it finds them. A business that is "Shop No 4" in one place and "Unit 4" in another, or that carries an old mobile number on a listing nobody has logged into for years, looks less certain to Google. That uncertainty costs you.

So before adding another listing, make the ones you have match. Exactly the same business name, exactly the same address format, exactly the same phone number. It is dull work and it is one of the few jobs in this field with a clear right answer.

What this will and will not do

Listings make your business easier for Google to verify and easier for customers to find. They are foundational work.

They are not a ranking strategy on their own. Directory listings will not put you above an established competitor, and nobody can guarantee a position in the map box regardless, because how close you are to the person searching is one of the biggest factors and nobody can move your business.

Expect this to be part of a picture that takes three to six months to show consistently, not a weekend that changes your phone volume. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.

Listings, reviews and Google Business Profile management are part of what we do on the Grow plan. If you would rather do it yourself, everything above is free and the order we listed it in is the order we would do it in.
