Why Your Business Is Not Appearing in ChatGPT and Perplexity Answers: How to Fix It

By Sashenk Anand Jordan · 25 Sept 2026

You type a question into ChatGPT or Perplexity, something like "Which is a good physiotherapy clinic in Pune?", and it names two or three businesses with confidence. Yours is not one of them. That is a fair thing to worry about, and it is worth understanding before you spend money on it.

This page explains why a business does not get mentioned, how to test it properly, and what to fix first. It is honest about what nobody can promise, because on this subject a lot of people are promising things they do not control.

How AI assistants decide who to mention

An assistant gets an answer in one of two ways, and the difference matters.

Some answers come from what the model learned in training. That is a snapshot of the web from months or years ago. You cannot change it quickly, and nobody can change it for you.

Other answers come from a live web search the assistant runs at the moment you ask. Perplexity does this by default and shows you the sources it used. ChatGPT and Gemini can do it too, particularly when a question needs current or local information.

That split is the whole story. The second kind is something you can influence, because it depends on what is on the web right now: your own site, your listings, your reviews, and what other sites say about you. It is the same kind of information Google uses, read by a different system that then writes a summary. This is what people mean by answer engine optimization, or generative engine optimization: making it easy for these systems to find you, understand you and trust you.

First, test it properly

One miss proves very little. These assistants give different answers on different days and to differently worded questions, so look for a pattern rather than a verdict.

  1. Ask the way a customer would, and try five or six phrasings. "Best dentist near me" and "which dentist in Jaipur is good for braces" can return completely different names.
  2. Try ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. They do not agree with each other.
  3. Note who is named and who is not, including which of your competitors appear.
  4. In Perplexity, look at the sources it lists under the answer. If it is citing a directory or a competitor's page, that tells you exactly where you are missing.

Do this before you change anything. It turns a vague worry into a specific gap.

Why isn't my brand mentioned in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers?

In roughly the order we would check them:

The assistant cannot tell what you do. If your website describes services in vague language, or the useful parts are inside images, PDFs or pages that need a login, a machine has very little to read. Say plainly who you are, what you do, where and for whom, in ordinary words on a page anyone can open.

Nothing else on the web backs you up. These systems tend to favour businesses they can verify from more than one place. A business that is only mentioned on its own website is harder to check than one that also appears in directories, has real reviews and is listed consistently elsewhere. Independent mentions count.

Your details disagree with each other. If your name, address and phone number vary between your website, your Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha and other listings, the system cannot be sure which is right, and it may leave you out rather than risk getting it wrong.

Your site is turning AI crawlers away. Some sites block them without anybody deciding to, usually through a security plugin or a default setting. Open yourbusiness.in/robots.txt in your browser and look for lines that mention crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot with "Disallow" under them. If you find that, ask whoever built your site before changing anything, because the file also controls Google.

Your pages do not answer the questions people ask. Most professional websites list services and never answer a question. A CA firm that clearly answers "How do I file my return if I have income from more than one source?" gives an assistant something it can actually use. That is not magic, it is just useful content in plain language.

Machines cannot easily read your details. Structured data, sometimes called schema, is a block of code that states your business type, location, services and contact details in a form software can read. It helps, but it is not a switch. Without the points above it will not do much. There is a plain guide to setting it up if you want to do it yourself.

You are simply new, or small. A business that opened recently has had less time to be written about. That is the one reason on this list that only time fixes.

How to make your company show up in AI responses, in order

  1. Test it properly, as above, and write down the gaps.
  2. Make one page say clearly what you do. Your homepage or main service page, in plain words.
  3. Answer your five most common customer questions on your website, in direct sentences.
  4. Make your name, address and phone number identical everywhere. Start with a list of the free business listing sites in India that are worth your time.
  5. Collect real reviews on Google, and ask your customers consistently.
  6. Check your robots.txt for accidental blocking.
  7. Add structured data once the basics are in place.
  8. Test again after a month, and again after three, using the same questions each time so you can compare.

There is more on the whole process in how to make your business appear in AI answers.

What nobody can promise you

Nobody controls what an AI assistant says, and anyone who guarantees a mention is selling you something they cannot deliver. These systems change often and decide for themselves what to cite. What you can do is make your business easy to find, easy to understand and easy to verify, then measure whether it is working and keep adjusting.

How long this takes

Plan on three to six months before you see a consistent difference, and longer in a crowded category. It depends on the same slow things as ordinary search: content being published, found and trusted over time. Anyone promising results in weeks is guessing.

If you would rather have somebody check this every month and tell you honestly whether it is working, that is what our AI SEO services do. If you would rather work through the list above yourself, everything on it is free.
